Surfboard Legropes

Shop surfboard legropes and leashes for shortboards, mid-lengths, longboards and bigger-wave boards. Start with leash length: choose a legrope close to your board length, then choose cord thickness and cuff style for the waves you surf most.

For most everyday shortboards, a 6ft standard-duty leash is the safest starting point. Mid-lengths and funboards usually suit 7ft or 8ft legropes, while longboards need 9ft plus ankle or calf leashes. Big-wave and heavier-surf setups should prioritise strength, release and the right rail saver.

What length legrope do I need?

Choose a legrope close to your board length. A 6ft leash suits most shortboards, 7ft and 8ft leashes suit mid-lengths and larger boards, and 9ft plus leashes suit longboards and mals.

Comp, standard or big-wave leash?

Comp leashes are thinner and lighter for small waves and performance surfing. Standard leashes are the everyday choice. Big-wave or heavier-duty leashes add strength for bigger surf.

Ankle or calf leash for longboards?

Ankle leashes are familiar and easy for most surfers. Calf leashes can keep the cord higher and may suit longboarding, walking the board or reducing tangles around the feet.

When should I replace a legrope?

Replace it if the cord is nicked, stretched, cracked, sun-damaged, the swivels are stiff, the rail saver is frayed or the cuff no longer grips securely.

Do I need a spare leash string?

Yes. Keep a spare leash string with your fins or wax so a worn string does not end a session before you paddle out.
