Softboards Guide - Best Options for URBN Surf and Surf Beaches.

Softboard surfboards, also known as foam surfboards or soft-top surfboards, have gained popularity for several standout qualities, especially among beginner and intermediate surfers. While softboards have many advantages, it's important to note that they may not provide the same level of performance and manoeuvrability as traditional hard surfboards. As surfers gain experience and skill, they may eventually transition to more advanced boards for a higher level of performance. However, softboards remain an excellent choice for learning, practicing, and enjoying the sport of surfing.

SOFTBOARD CHARACTERISTICS

STABILITY & SAFETY

Softboards are known for their high stability in the water. The foam construction provides buoyancy and makes it easier for beginners to catch and ride waves, maintain balance, and progress in their surfing skills.  Softboards are much safer for beginners and children compared to traditional hard surfboards. The soft, forgiving material minimises the risk of injury in case of accidental collisions or wipeouts.

DURABILITY & VERSATILITY

Softboards are more durable than traditional surfboards, especially when it comes to resisting dings, cracks, and other damage. The foam construction can withstand rough handling and is less likely to require costly repairs.  Softboards are suitable for a wide range of wave conditions, making them versatile for surfers of different skill levels. They can handle small, mushy waves as well as larger, more powerful surf.

AFFORDABILITY

Softboards are often more budget-friendly than traditional hardboards, which can be quite expensive. This makes them a great option for those who want to try surfing without a significant financial investment.

ECO-FRIENDLY OPTIONS

Some softboards are made from more eco-friendly materials, such as recycled foam or sustainable manufacturing processes, which can appeal to environmentally conscious surfers.

FUN AND PLAYFULNESS

Softboards can be a lot of fun to ride even for more experienced surfers. Their buoyancy and stability allow for playful manoeuvres and experimentation in the water. Many surf schools and rental shops use softboards because they are excellent tools for teaching beginners the basics of surfing. They help individuals build confidence and progress quickly.

BOARDS TO SUIT YOUR ABILITY

These three categories cover a wide range of surfers, from those just starting out to those looking to refine their skills or pursue more challenging surfing experiences.

BEGINNER

Designed for novice surfers, these softboards offer high stability, buoyancy, and user-friendly shapes, making it easy for beginners to learn and enjoy the sport. Mostly used in surf school environments.

INTERMEDIATE

Suitable for surfers with some experience, intermediate softboards provide a balance between stability and performance, helping surfers develop their skills and tackle more challenging waves. Used in URBN Surf and coastal environments on small to medium waves.

PERFORMANCE

Geared towards more experienced surfers, performance softboards offer sharper rails, increased manoeuvrability, and responsiveness, allowing surfers to take on steeper waves and perform advanced manoeuvres. Mostly used in advanced waves at URBN Surf and surf pools as well as a second board for coastal wave variety. Our upper end of the softboard range is dominated by Crime Surfboards. All CRIME Surfboards are designed by CJ Nelson, and are constructed from shaped high quality eps foam blanks with stringers (1-3 depending on size), glassed with 2 layers of 6oz epoxy cloth (top and bottom), then finished with a textured 5mm EVA foam skin (which you should not wax), laminated to the deck.
